Operational Wisdom & Logic

Operational Wisdom & Logic

What We Do

Operational Wisdom & Logic works with operational enterprises in the resources sectors including public companies, private producers, service providers, government departments, technology, research and not-for-profit organisations.

But we are different to typical contractors and consultants as we aim to always work collaboratively.  That is, we focus on bringing talented, experienced collaborators closer to clients who value competency, efficiency and effectiveness while reducing the costs of engagement, overheads and ongoing management and administration burdens associated with normal modes of work.

We do this by ensuring our collaborators and our clients eliminate unnecessary costs and structures that add little to no value to the actual work required.  We keep mark-ups to cover overheads to as low as 3%, allowing our collaborators to realise the true value of their work AND clients to enjoy the lowest cost for the highest value.

An example of the specialist expertise we have brought to a number of clients includes:

Decision Making Assurance Via Due Diligence

Due diligence is a decision-making assurance process to ensure that a party choosing to enter into agreements and transactions with others does so with a well-informed understanding of the potential risks and rewards.

We emphasise decision quality in decision-making. With this in mind we utilize our extensive experience in decision analysis, project management, investment analysis, engineering design, construction, operations, risk, safety and environmental management to inform our clients.

We evaluate assets in all project phases from opportunity identification, to alternative generation, concept selection, design, construction, operations and decommissioning. Our experience with all phases of the asset lifecycle means that our team of collaborators is very well qualified to enhance and protect the interests of our clients.

Our Capabilities

Together our collaborators provide a full suite of technical and commercial capability including:

  • Engineering discipline support (process, facilities, subsea, and marine);
  • Technical safety, risk and process and environmental hazard evaluation;
  • Project management, construction, commissioning and operational readiness;
  • Valuation, decision analysis and investment metrics;
  • Commercial advisory and contract review;
  • Stakeholder Management.

Our Approach

Summarising our approach to all due diligence assignments we:

  • Take a big picture approach to framing and scope of work definition;
  • Utilize our extensive project assurance process and peer review experience;
  • Employ fact-based forensic evidence gathering and analysis;
  • Build trust, but verify, key data and opinions provided by others;
  • Insist upon physical inspection of assets whenever reasonably possible;
  • Interview stakeholders to identify key drivers, verify data and interrogate unknowns;
  • Examine relevant contract terms, regulations and standards as appropriate;
  • Focus on the fundamentals of risk, opportunity and value;
  • Employ ‘fit for purpose’ analysis and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Risk Management for Companies & Projects

OW&L’s collaborators are often asked to provide risk management expertise during various phases of company development and projects that aims to identify, qualify or quantify and respond to risks as and when they arise.  This can extend from health, safety and environmental hazards assessment on key project deliverables, through to core company legal, reputational, financial and project risks.  Often, boards of directors or senior management teams simply need a point of reference and a streamlined process for capturing “show-stopper” issues and tracking their progress.  Other times they require highly technical risk assessments.

It is well understood that the earlier the process of risk management is commenced in a project (indeed within a company) the more likely risks can be eliminated altogether, or mitigating strategies can be embedded and implemented.

The risk management process need not be complicated or time consuming.  In fact, when undertaking the initial parts of the risk management process, substantial understanding can be completed on critical components in just a day or two.  Gaining visibility and control of risk should aim to be a manageable, repeatable and easy to communicate and review.

OW&L utilises the AS/NZS ISO 31000 Risk Management standard framework in most of its work with company boards, senior management teams and project teams because it is well accepted and forms the basis for many later risk initiatives that teams might encounter.   We provide simple grounding training followed immediately by “pedal to the metal” workshops that can be run over a day or two with key personnel and that provide immediately documented output.

Our goal is always to help a team get some early momentum on risk and prepare for eventualities.  Some of the key areas include:

Introduction to Risk Management

  • Establishing company or project risk objectives clearly as an absolute foundation for managing risk.
  • Defining risk and opportunity, providing grounding on how risk manifests itself within a chosen business or project and giving examples to underscore motivation.
  • Clarifying why risk must be managed and who has responsibility for it.

The Risk Management Process

  • Describing the risk management process outlined by AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 and beginning the process in earnest.
  • Establishing the risk context for a company, division or project, one of the most important foundations for managing risk and the most overlooked.
  • Establishing a risk register to record risks and ensure they are pursued with auditable rigor.
  • Commencing the process of identifying risks.  Focussing on the big showstoppers and critical concerns, many of which are often well known.
  • Analysing risks by developing effective criteria (e.g. risk matrices) that aid in prioritising risk and helping risk visibility.
  • Providing techniques for evaluating risk either qualitative or quantitatively that focuses on the consequences and likelihood of their occurrence.

Preparing for Later Steps

  • Aiding in defining criteria for risk acceptance, including knowing when risk is reasonable.
  • Approaches to risk treatment, from elimination altogether, risk reduction, risk sharing or to improvement to safeguards and developing systems and procedures that are robust.
  • Highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and review, communication and consultation.  Continuously improving the risk picture.

Improving Safety through HAZID/ ENVID / HAZOP / SIMOPs / ALARP / SIL

Several of OW&L’s collaborators have been working at the forefront of the resources industries for multiple decades. During that time, one of our greatest strengths has been the ability to apply Socratic techniques and strong facilitation skills alongside engineering knowledge and experience in solving complex problems.  One of the  most important applications of these techniques is in the identification, analysis and resolution of hazards and risks when reviewing process designs, plant concepts and operating plans.

The HAZID/ ENVID / HAZOP /SIMOPs / ALARP / SIL techniques and the use of guideword driven risk assessments are well established within the oil, gas and chemical industries.  However, many clients report dissatisfaction and variation with workshops conducted by some industry providers.  In particular, poor depth of review, improper application of the methodology, sub-standard quality of the output and other de-railing factors are often cited.

In response, OW&L maintains a core team of highly experienced facilitators, scribes and independent subject-matter experts who have built enviable reputation in providing safety, hazard and risk workshop facilitation services.  They are not merely senior consulting engineers with wide ranging experience. They are adept leaders with significant chairmanship skills and an enthusiastic and positive presence who are regularly called upon to manage difficult teams and maintain a focus on safety, risk and opportunity.

We are committed to applying the fundamental principles of hazard and risk analysis and only utilise personnel with a full understanding of proper Socratic technique.

OW&L is often  called upon to conduct HAZIDs and HAZOPs involving groups with challenging agendas or in politically heated design team environments. We can ensure that the necessary rigor is applied to the technique to produce not only an excellent outcome but also a transparent and auditable result in compliance with statutory requirements.
