Operational Wisdom & Logic is an innovative technical engineering, scientific and management consultancy committed to providing operational enterprises in the resources sector with access to professionals with a deeper knowledge and wider experience.

We offer our clients a fresh approach to resourcing projects and providing operational support through collaboration, bringing our diverse network of technical experts closer to them, solving complex challenges more directly, cost effectively and efficiently.

Our collaborators are all fully qualified, reference checked, highly experienced professionals with niche skills and an ability to work to tight timeframes, often on bespoke projects requiring complex deliverables. All have decades of experience and, being fully mobile and self-sufficient, are able to provide services free of the high cost overheads and bureaucratic inefficiencies of traditional, out-dated contractor and consulting models.

Most importantly, our collaborators are honest, ethical and astute business people in their own right dedicated to delivering the best of services and value for our clients.

Grant Lukies

Managing Director

HAZOP / HAZID / SIMOPS / ALARP Facilitator, Risk Management and Management Systems

Grant is a chemical engineer and safety / risk consultant with over 25 years of experience specialising in process troubleshooting, operational support, management and hazard analysis.  

He has worked in over 25 countries, predominantly in the offshore and onshore oil and gas industries and energy utilities sectors with some additional experience in mining, refining and refractories.  He is especially adept at facilitation and participation in teams tasked with investigating and optimising technical options and utilising structured methods to reach valued solutions.  Grant has experience with due diligence, risk management and management system development, process improvement and technical auditing (particularly ISO 9000 / ISO 14000 / ISO 18000 and ISO 31000).

Grant is  recognised internationally as a leading HAZOP / HAZID / SIMOPS / ALARP and Risk Management chairman by many global oil and gas operators.

Jason Self

Senior Consultant – Production Chemistry

Flow Assurance, Chemistry Management, Laboratory Operation

Jason Self is a Production Chemist with 17 years of broad international experience in the oil and gas industry, providing technical and management expertise in all areas of upstream production chemistry.  An expert in providing oilfield production chemistry management with functional chemistries, application design, and monitoring programs required to successfully manage asset integrity, flow assurance, and phase separation optimisation.

Jason has a strong expertise in production operation systems, subsea and surface, and the monitoring and optimisation of production chemistry; including fluid separation systems, produced water management, water injection systems (seawater and PWRI), chemical injection systems, utilities, sour gas and oil treatment, and gas dehydration systems.

Jason also has significant experience in laboratory development, operation, and management.

Martin Main

Senior Consultant - HSE Management & Approvals

Personal & Organisational Change

Martin possesses a unique skill set that enables him to offer a fresh approach to problem solving. Particularly strong in management system development and implementation, Martin has spent the past 20 years in the oil and gas industry, working nationally and internationally in consulting and senior management roles, mainly in the health, safety and environment field. As Project HSE/Approvals Manager on numerous projects, key responsibilities have included team management, all aspects of HSE approvals planning and delivery, emergency preparedness, security management, facilitating project risk and stakeholder management processes, contractor management, audit and review. Martin holds university degrees in Mechanical (BEng) and Subsea (MSc) Engineering.

In addition to engineering consulting, Martin is the Director of Front Foot Ventures (FFV), an organisation set-up to facilitate personal and organisation growth in a safe and nurturing environment. He believes we all possess the ability to experience lasting positive change whatever our circumstances, and with careful yet courageous exploration, we can all find purpose and meaning in our lives. While progressing his Masters degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy, Martin facilitates individual and small group sessions in boundaries and emotional health. FFV’s core services are coaching, mentoring and counselling.

Sue Capper

Senior Consultant - HSE

Health, Safety & Environment

Sue Capper has over twenty years of experience in the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) related disciplines across Major Hazard Facilities both onshore and offshore for the Oil and Gas Industry. These roles include senior HSE Management and technical specialist roles with major international organisations.  Sue’s capability in working with people is exemplified by her extensive training and workshop facilitation experience.  Areas of particular expertise include:

  • Developing and implementing HSE management systems to ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certification to achieve best practice;
  • Developing and implementing emergency response, crisis management and recovery plans;
  • Management of HSE government approvals and regulator liaison;
  • Safety Case revisions for projects or drilling programs;
  • Brownfields Project Environmental Plans;
  • Leading/conducting incident investigations;
  • Hazard identification (HAZID) studies, risk assessment and workshop facilitation;
  • Designing and delivering health and safety training programs to all levels of an organisation; and
  • HSE audits and regulatory compliance processes.

Brad Lukies

Senior Consultant - Strategic Planning & Decision Analysis

Decision Analysis, Commercial Advisory, and Project Assurance Processes

Brad Lukies leads OW&L’s service offerings in decision analysis, commercial advisory, and project assurance processes.  He also contributes to strategic planning and project pre-FEED planning services. Brad is an accomplished team facilitator with 30 years in the energy business spanning both upstream and downstream.  He has previously worked in various process engineering, operations planning, project execution, supply logistics and commercial roles.  Brad is founder and principal consultant of a Houston-based international energy consulting firm, and has completed assignments for multiple clients around the globe with focus upon oil, gas and LNG projects. Brad holds a B.Eng. in chemical engineering and a M.App.Fin. in applied finance and investment.

Allen Duffin

Senior Consultant – Subsea Engineering

Subsea & Facilities Engineering

Allen is a Subsea Engineer with over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry primarily involved in offshore and subsea project engineering (UK / Australia / Asia).  Allen’s career has been wide and varied working for both engineering consultancies and offshore installation contractors.

Whilst working for engineering consultancies Allen has conducted a broad range of activities from FEED and detailed design, asset integrity management, offshore inspection, maintenance and repair, decommissioning, onshore and offshore pipeline repairs and secondments to operators to work on specific projects.  Allen’s offshore experience ranges from subsea tie-ins, pipeline repairs, umbilical and flexible installation, pipeline commissioning, to major IMR scopes.

Allen is very much a team player who thrives working in a project environment to achieve positive outcomes for the team but is equally capable of working independently on specific scopes of work.

Martin Burke

Senior Consultant - Process Engineering

Facilities Design, Flow Assurance, Conceptual and FEED Project Assurance

Martin Burke is a Consulting Chemical Engineer with over 20 years of experience in facilities design, flow assurance, the production of risk assessments and preparation of safety cases. This experience has been gained in both onshore and offshore facilities in petroleum exploration and development and in industries such as nuclear and rail safety, metals reclamation and clay processing.

In addition to technical skills, Martin has experience in the management of multi-discipline projects with teams of up to 60 people and durations of up to 12 months. Martin has also been office manager for a satellite office, developing client relationships and gaining experience of managing business development. Martin has also been a Process Department Manager responsible for the operation of a fifteen-strong team of process engineers.

Andrew Bobey

Senior Consultant – Petroleum & Reservoir Engineering

Petroleum & Reservoir Engineering

Andrew is a Reservoir / Petroleum Engineering Consultant with over 30 years of geographically diverse experience.  Prior to becoming a consultant, Andrew worked in various staff positions for large multinationals, medium and small sized independent operators and an internationally recognized consulting firm.  His extensive and broad range of experience means he can perform the petroleum engineering tasks that are often divided between several engineers.  His early experience as a completions engineer, production engineer and a wellsite supervisor has ensured he takes a pragmatic approach to his evaluations and knows how to uncover the key information in technical and well completion reports.  In addition, his experience with economic analysis also ensures he is focused on the bottom line and not just the technical aspects of a project.

Graham Davidson

Senior Consultant – Engineering and Project Management

Front End Engineering, Field Development Planning and Major Capital Project Execution

Graham is a process engineering and project management consultant with 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, having held various key positions for client O&G operators, contractor organisations, as well as internationally recognised engineering and consulting firms.
Graham has significant front-end and detail design experience, has worked as the Pre-Developments Manager overseeing new business opportunities and field development planning, as Engineering Manager for floating service providers, and as Project Director for multi-billion dollar offshore gas/condensate developments.  He has worked internationally in Houston, Australia, UK/Europe and is regionally based in SE Asia.
Graham holds a B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering (Hons), an eMBA in Finance / Strategy, and is a chartered engineer (IChemE) with PMP project management accreditation.

Ashley Fertch

Environmental Specialist

Environmental Approvals, Stakeholder Engagement, Planning and Assessment

Ash has over 12 years’ experience as an Environmental Specialist within the oil and gas industry, mining industry, and consulting environments.  He has an excellent understanding of onshore and offshore petroleum legislation as well as all other Western Australian and Commonwealth environmental legislation.  He has had notable success in gaining NOPSEMA acceptance of Environment Plans and Oil Pollution Emergency Plans for extremely difficult and complex programs.  His previous experience has helped develop exceptional project management skills enabling the management of significant budgets, projects, stakeholder consultation and project schedules.
Ash has been the lead author and project manager for DMIRS and NOPSEMA petroleum approvals for projects including environmental impact assessments, emergency capability analysis and response planning, stakeholder engagement and environmental data analysis and interpretation.
